The competition for the 2025-2026 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is now closed. The next competition will be announced in February 2025.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers awards for U.S. academics, artists, and professionals interested to teach, conduct research and/or carry out a professional project in Romania in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. The Commission accepts proposals in all disciplines. An invitation letter is recommended but not required.
In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities.
Award length and period: Four or nine months. Under certain circumstances, the Fulbright Commission may consider three months (minimum).
One-semester grants may begin in October or February; two-semester grants must begin in October. For grants involving research, there may be a certain limited flexibility, with the agreement of the host institution.
Degree requirements: PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) required.
Language requirements: All teaching will be in English; proficiency in another language is not required.
For research, language proficiency sufficient to complete the proposed project is required. For applicants without local language proficiency, feasibility of conducting the project must be demonstrated in the project statement.
