Beatrice Suzana Neagu

Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program, Spring 2025

When I found out I had been selected for the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) Program in Florida, I knew I was about to embark on a life-changing adventure. What I didn’t expect was how deeply it would impact me—as a teacher, a learner, and a global citizen.

My host institution was Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), a university that lives and breathes sustainability. Every corner of FGCU inspired new ways of thinking about teaching and learning. As part of the Environmental Education cohort, I joined a group of 22 passionate teachers from around the world, all eager to explore how we can bring real-world issues into our classrooms. We engaged in workshops focused on innovative teaching methods, digital tools, and project-based learning. The Food Forest and Eco-Garden — outdoor learning spaces designed for environmental education — reminded us of the importance of hands-on, experiential learning. These visits also inspired me to integrate more nature-based and sustainability-focused activities into my English classes.

A key component of the Fulbright TEA experience was the practicum—and I had the honor of completing mine at Dunbar High School in Fort Myers. For two weeks, I observed and engaged with students and teachers in a dynamic, technology learning environment. This experience allowed me to compare educational strategies, classroom management techniques, and student engagement practices. I collaborated with local educators, shared ideas, and reflected on how to bring more interactivity and real-world relevance into my own teaching practice.

Beyond the classroom, Fulbright provided countless moments of cultural enrichment. A visit to the Naples Botanical Garden or Babcock Ranch deepened my appreciation for environmental stewardship and the beauty of biodiversity. Our group also traveled to Miami, where we explored the city and learned more about the social dynamics shaping American communities today.

A special part of my journey was participating in the Friendship Families program. My host family not only welcomed me into their home but also organized a barbecue and trips to a private island for a group of Fulbrighters. These moments of warmth and hospitality created meaningful friendships.

Leaving Florida wasn’t easy. I packed up my suitcase with lesson ideas, classroom strategies, and keepsakes—but also with new friendships and new collaborations. The Fulbright program gave me more than just professional development—it gave me perspective. The Fulbright experience taught me that we’re all connected—whether through shared challenges in education, our love of nature, or our dreams for a better future. And for that, I am deeply grateful.
