Emanuel Tundrea

Fulbright Visiting Scholar, 2020-2021

From the very first day with the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program it was like a miracle was unfolding. The School of Science, Technology and Health, at Biola University has a strong community of researchers and everyone in the lab was very welcoming. Not only did I find a great research team, but more than that: I found mentors! They definitely enlarged my field of vision in bioinformatics latest research and they even patiently helped me improve my academic writing in English. I must confess that there was no way I could fit in my luggage all the good books I received during my stay at Biola. Hopefully, the ship that is carrying them will not lose them as they are so precious.

Therefore, my Fulbright experience will definitely remain one of my life’s highlights. I could write a whole book with a chapter dedicated to many “amigos queridos” (one cannot be in sunny CA without learning a bit of Spanish) whose names there is no space to mention all, but who took precious time to teach, equip and discuss profound questions in science and faith, smiled to us, encouraged us and made the whole experience for all my family so amazing.

Romanian Alumni Stories

"Writing about my Fulbright experience in the past tense is probably one of the hardest things I had to do in my adult life, not because I am unable to, nor am I the type of person who easily becomes overly nostalgic, but simply because it was an experience I would have never wanted to end. The further in time I get from it, the more I feel how it has changed me, how spending forty-five days immersed in such a transformative environment turned me into an even more focused professional, a better teacher and overall, an improved human being."
