Monica Ulmanu

Fulbright Student, 2008-2009

Fulbright and UNC have given me the unique opportunity to study in one of the top journalism schools in the world. Taking part in a revolutionary multimedia program has allowed me to not only acquire extremely useful skills and knowledge in class, but also to work on projects such as News 21, a Carnegie-Knight initiative promoting new forms of journalism. As one of the students selected for the News 21 team at UNC, I have contributed to the Powering a Nation project (poweringanation.org), where I worked with a fantastic group of instructors and colleagues, being able to use and develop my journalism and multimedia design abilities. The project has already received widespread acclaim in the journalistic community, and was awarded the second place in the National Press Photographers Association’s multimedia contest in August 2009.

Romanian Alumni Stories

"This cultural exchange is a story about our universal values unfolding from acts of random kindness and generosity to rich and thoughtful conversations with my academic peers. Each day I have the opportunity to learn about the broader meaning of the word education."
