Nancy Sherman

U.S. Fulbright Scholar, 2008-2009

My family and I, husband Pat and son Evan, arrived in Romania in late August 2008 to begin my semester at the University of Oradea in Oradea, Romania. Besides teaching courses in Career Counseling and other counseling topics I conducted research along with Romanian colleagues on the vocational identity of first-year Romanian university students. I also had the wonderful opportunity to present workshops and keynotes at several conferences and universities while there. Our family was warmly welcomed by everyone we encountered and my colleagues at the University of Oradea in the Faculty of Social and Humanistic Sciences were the best! We were able to travel quite a bit around this beautiful country which is so different geographically and historically from ours. I found the graduate students at the University of Oradea to be very well trained and eager to learn whatever I could share.

One of the highlights of my Fulbright in Romania was working with the Romanian Fulbright staff. Orientation was wonderful, lots of good information and the opportunity to get to know fellow Fulbrighters. The Fulbright staff, most notably Mihai Moroiu, was available to assist with our needs, and even anticipated what those needs might be. For the new American Fulbrights, take advantage of every opportunity that unfolds and I wish you as wonderful an experience as I have had!

American Alumni Stories

"The Romania of 1979-81 was set in tragedy. The pain of oppression was everywhere—food lines, fear in people’s eyes, and, markedly, the ‘law’ to report all conversations with Westerners to the police within 24 hours. I had the honor of receiving a Fulbright lectureship for those two years and was fortunate to have been located in Sibiu."

Maria Borger

U.S. Fulbright Grantee, 1979-1981
