Home Grants for U.S. Citizens Inter-Country Travel Grant

The Inter-Country Travel Grant

Romanian universities/institutions are welcome to invite one of the approximately 250 American Fulbright Scholars present across Europe in any given academic year. The Inter-Country Travel Grant supports the Romanian institutions by covering the international roundtrip travel expenses of the invited American Scholar.

The purpose of the visit can be lecturing, consulting on an academic course or program curriculum and evaluation, workshop participation, presenting a scholarly paper at a conference, evaluation/development project or other relevant outreach activity with a wide audience/impact. It is not possible to apply for the grant for research purposes.

You can find the list of 2024-2025 Fulbright American Scholars in Europe here  (list complied by Fulbright Finland). You may also visit the Fulbright Scholar Online Directory and use the Advance Search fields to find Fulbright Scholars by specialization in the current academic year (the directory is generally updated by CIES in October).

Application Procedure

1. Contact the U.S. Fulbright Scholar you would like to invite to Romania. If you do not have a specific scholar in mind, please use the above-mentioned list to search for a suitable scholar.

2. Agree on the details of the visit with the American Fulbrighter (purpose and impact of the visit; daily program; local costs such as accommodation, meals, and other resulting expenses).

3. Email the Fulbright Commission with a request for an Inter-Country Travel Grant to cover the inter-country travel costs of the U.S. Fulbright Scholar. In this request, please give the following information:

  • The full name of the Romanian institution and department, including contact details;
  • The name, title and contact details of the host;
  • The name and contact information of the American Fulbrighter you want to invite and their current location in Europe;
  • The dates of the visit;
  • The requested amount for international travel costs and local transportation costs;
  • The estimated local expenses (covered by the host institution or as agreed before the visit). The Romanian host and the Fulbrighter must agree on local costs such as housing, meals, and any other resulting expenses among themselves.
  • The reason for inviting this specific American Fulbrighter;
  • The proposed program for the Fulbrighter at your institution, including the estimated number of persons reached and their composition (students, researchers, teachers).

You can apply at any moment of the academic year; the applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Invite a U.S. Fulbright Scholar from elsewhere in Europe for a short visit to Romania!

Invited scholars need to be on their Fulbright grant period during the Inter-Country visit.

Duration of the visit:
maximum 5 days

Program costs
  • Funds up to $1,000 are available for inter-country travel and local transportation for a maximum of five (5) days of scholar activity in Romania.
  • Additional local expenses (such as accommodation, meals) are not covered by the grant. These resulting expenses are to be covered by the host institution or as agreed before the visit.
