The Fulbright U.S. Student Program

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides opportunities for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to teach or conduct research in Romania, through English Teaching Assistant Awards or Open Study/Research Awards.

Open Study/Research Awards

Candidate Profile: U.S. candidates at all degree levels will be considered, but preference is given to Master’s and Ph.D. students. The Commission accepts proposals in all disciplines. Applicants should have strong intercultural and leadership skills, show academic maturity and rigor and be capable of working independently. The proposed projects should be innovative, feasible and fit in the candidate’s previous academic training and future objectives.

Award Length and Period: 9 months. Grants begin in October.

English Teaching Assistant Awards

Candidate Profile: Applications from U.S. candidates of all degree levels and academic backgrounds are welcome; however, preference will be given to graduate students with a demonstrated interest in international education. Prior teaching experience is strongly recommended, and candidates with teacher certifications are particularly welcome. Applicants should provide detailed descriptions of their teaching experience and interest. The Commission seeks grantees who are mature, flexible, responsible, and capable of working independently in various institutional settings across Romania. Moreover, applicants should be ready to navigate cultural differences and adapt to diverse academic, cultural, and social environments.

Placement Type: University/Post-Secondary Institution

Award Length and Period: 9 months. Grants begin in October.

Ability to conduct independent, unstructured research with minimal oversight is crucial. Applications will be considered in fields related to Romania and Bulgaria, especially: European studies, East European studies, Balkan studies, Black Sea studies, political science, history, social sciences, classical studies, environment and sustainability, archeology, and the arts. Previous experience in the region is not considered a disadvantage. Knowledge of regional languages is considered an advantage.

Award Length and Period: 10 months – five months in Bulgaria and five months in Romania. Applicants may select which country to visit first, depending on the needs of their project.

"My time as a Fulbrighter was about so much more than the research I was honored to work on. It was about building lasting relationships, learning about Romanian culture, and sharing my experiences with friends."

Elizabeth Wiita

U.S. Fulbright Student Researcher, 2019-2020

"Although my Fulbright cohort underwent an experience that is (hopefully) unlike any other, I loved my time in Romania and learned so much. I am so grateful to the Fulbright Program and the Romanian Commission for this incredible opportunity that I will remember for the rest of my life."

Claire Hungar

U.S. Fulbright ETA, 2019-2020

"In all, I feel fulfilled despite a truncated Fulbright experience. Thankfully, I got a taste of all my goals, in some fashion, before the pandemic. And it’s only a matter of time before I come back to fully explore Romania and Europe, hand-in-hand with my fellow colleagues and friends."

Allen Chen

U.S. Fulbright ETA, 2019-2020

“My time in Romania is a stained-glass window of images–the rush of the Bucharest metro, […] afternoons building furniture with a German expat named Brunhilde, the Moldovan ballerina and Ukrainian didgeridoo player who couchsurfed with me on their way through Sibiu, the attic windows staring like eyes over the squares and alleyways of Sibiu, and frosty evenings in the Piata Mare as Christmas music mingled with the scent of vin fiert—and I’m grateful for all of it.”

Colin Cutler

U.S. Fulbright ETA, 2019-2020

international educational and
cultural exchange experiences.
