Testing

Examinations typically required for
undergraduate admissions

SAT I and II – Although a growing number of universities are becoming test-optional, the SAT I/SAT Reasoning test remains a way for candidates to demonstrate the general knowledge/critical thinking skills needed to thrive in college.

SAT I

As of March 2016, SAT I /SAT Reasoning comprises two compulsory sections – Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and the Math section – and the Essay, which is optional. Each compulsory section of SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800, with three separate scores, ranging from 2 to 8, in the Essay section.

The test is administered in the paper and pencil format and is about 4 hours long.

Full information about the test and registration is available here.

SAT II

The SAT II/ SAT Subject tests – also required or recommended by some universities – measure your knowledge of particular subjects (Math, Physics, Literature, foreign languages, etc.) and your ability to apply that knowledge. Just like SAT Reasoning, the SAT Subject tests are administered in the paper and pencil format. They contain multiple-choice questions and each subject test takes one hour to complete. You can take up to three Subject Tests on a given test date and each test is scored on a scale of 200-800. Learn more about SAT Subject Tests here.

Examinations typically required for
graduate admissions

GRE/GRE Subject or GMAT – The vast majority of doctoral programs and some master’s programs require the submission of GRE or GMAT test scores as part of the application process

GRE

The GRE revised General Test is administered in English and is available in the computer- and paper-based format, although most, if not even all, testing centers in Romania administer only the computer-based version.

According to the information available on the official website www.ets.org/gre, the GRE revised General test includes the following scored sections:

  • Analytical Writing: this section features two separately timed writing tasks: “Analyze an Issue” and “Analyze an Argument”. You will have 30 minutes to solve each task.
  • Verbal Reasoning: two 30-minute sections consisting of about 20 questions each;
  • Quantitative Reasoning: two 35-minute sections consisting of approximately 20 questions each.

GMAT

Typically required by competitive graduate programs in the field of business administration, the GMAT includes four sections, according to the information available on the official website www.mba.com:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment: consists of a 30-minute writing task
  • Integrated Reasoning contains 12 questions to be solved in 30 minutes. Question types include multi-source reasoning, graphics interpretation, two-part analysis and table analysis
  • Quantitative measures basic mathematical skills and understanding of elementary concepts, and the ability to solve quantitative problems and to interpret graphic data. 75 minutes are available for 37 multiple-choice questions
  • Verbal includes questions testing reading comprehension, sentence correction, and critical reasoning. You will have to solve 41 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes.

English language tests

While all US universities accept TOEFL test scores, many also accept IELTS, Duolingo and Cambridge English test scores, but be sure to check in advance!
