50th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program in Romania Print
Category: News
The Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission is now celebrating 50 years since, following the bilateral Cultural Agreement signed by the Government of Romania and the Government of the United States of America, the Fulbright Program of educational exchanges began building its durable and beneficial presence in Romania. In order to celebrate this significant milestone for the program and to honor those who have contributed to its current prestige and standing, we intend to organize a series of events in Romania and the USA during the whole year.

The first event took place on Thursday June 3, 2010, in the presence of high-level American and Romanian officials, as well as luminaries of Romanian and foreign academia. The celebration benefited from the patronage of the U.S. Embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education. The program included an anniversary conference at “Carol I” Central University Library with participation of Dr. Keith Hitchins and Dr. Frederick Kellogg, first generation of U.S. Fulbright grantees to Romania, 1960, Dr. Ionel Haiduc, Romanian Fulbright alumnus, Dr. Vasile Puşcaş, Romanian Fulbright alumnus, Dr. Duncan McDougall, U.S. Fulbright alumnus, and dr. Rodica Mihăilă, Romanian Fulbright alumna.

The anniversary continued with the launch of the anniversary book including contributions from several distinguished Romanian and American grantees and alumni, and the photo exhibition "A Fish in the Sky" by Lauren Hermele, U.S. Fulbrighter and photographer. The event was accompanied by a live performance given by Chris Tanasescu and Margento group. Their intense music and verse generated a meaningful dialogue with Lauren’s photographs. Chris Tanasescu is currently preparing to start his research as a Fulbright scholar in the US.
