Romania took hold of my heart in 2015 and since then has consumed my mind and soul. As with any genuine commitment, my relationship with this beautiful, complex country has grown and deepened over time as I have learned of its many tragedies, as well as its many triumphs. I have surrendered myself to Romania. [...] As I continue my Romanian journey, I marvel over the resiliency and fortitude of the people. I am fortunate to have developed close relationships, familial in many ways, with many Romanians. And I am eternally grateful to have been granted a Fulbright and honored to become part of this amazing community.
Democracy and Elections
Paul Gardner, Emeritus Professor of Political Science at Luther College, recently returned to Romania as a Fulbright Specialist. During his two-week stay at West University of Timișoara, he engaged with students, faculty, and the public, offering insights through presentations on the American Presidential Election and Democracy.
Dr. Gardner has previously served as a Fulbright Scholar at West University of Timișoara’s Faculty of Letters, History, and Theology in 2019-2020 and again in 2021-2022.
Alumni Stories
Fulbright is not just about research and academic events. At least for me, it was also about meeting new people, experiencing the local food, trying to understand different values. For two months my wife and daughter (she is 9) were in Athens with me, and together we were able to travel to Orlando, San Francisco, and Washington. The experiences we had together were extraordinary, and my daughter was impressed enough to declare that she plans to come to college at UGA, probably around 2032.
