May Hong, Fulbright ETA affiliated with “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, recently gave a lecture at West University of Timișoara entitled “Postmodern Perspectives: Alienation & Absurdism in George Saunders’ Sticks”.
Delivered to first- and second-year MA students, the presentation explored the intersection of literature and visual arts, focusing on themes of alienation and absurdism—issues that are both relevant and pressing in contemporary society. Using George Saunders’ Sticks as a central text, May also drew connections to Edward Hopper’s evocative paintings and the experiences of pandemic lockdown. Through this interdisciplinary lens, she guided the audience in developing innovative and thought-provoking reading frameworks that extend beyond traditional seminar practices.
The event, part of the Fulbright Lectures Series organized by the American Studies Center at West University of Timișoara, featured open discussions that highlighted the power of dialogue to build intercultural and pedagogical bridges. This collaborative atmosphere exemplified the role of literary studies in fostering understanding across disciplines and cultures.
