On June 30, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission hosted the Pre-Departure Orientation for the 2026-2027 cohort of Romanian Fulbright grantees. This year’s group includes 36 grantees: 15 Fulbright Visiting Scholars, 16 Fulbright Students, and 5 Fulbright-RAF Scholars, who will study, pursue research, and conduct professional development activities at various universities across the United States. Their fields of study and research span a wide range of disciplines and interdisciplinary areas, including STEM fields, social sciences, humanities, and arts.
The event opened with welcome remarks from Alys L. Spensley, Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, Clara Volintiru, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Charles Vernon, representative of the Fulbright Board of Directors, Gabriel Leanca, Fulbright Ambassador, and Mircea Dumitru, Executive Director of the Fulbright Commission. Ms. Spensley also led a session offering recommendations for grantees as they prepare for their experience in the United States.
Throughout the orientation, participants explored practical, cultural, and academic aspects of life in the United States. Sessions covered topics including housing and budgeting, campus life, cultural adjustment, research opportunities, and cross-cultural communication, while also providing opportunities to connect and exchange ideas with fellow grantees. We would like to thank the recent alumni and grantees Camelia Lenart, Dumitrița Hîrtie, Florin-Mihai Nechita, Alexandra Timaru, László Bodor, Florina-Adina Ciuchița, and Nicușor Năstase for generously sharing their experiences, advice, and insights with the new cohort.
The orientation concluded with an evening reception with remarks by U.S. Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg, Secretary of State Clara Volintiru, and Executive Director Mircea Dumitru, who congratulated the new cohort of Romanian Fulbright grantees and celebrated the enduring Fulbright community together with alumni, partners, and friends of the program.
We wish the 2026-2027 Romanian Fulbright grantees a rewarding and inspiring experience and look forward to hearing about their accomplishments in the United States!
