Romania took hold of my heart in 2015 and since then has consumed my mind and soul. As with any genuine commitment, my relationship with this beautiful, complex country has grown and deepened over time as I have learned of its many tragedies, as well as its many triumphs. I have surrendered myself to Romania. [...] As I continue my Romanian journey, I marvel over the resiliency and fortitude of the people. I am fortunate to have developed close relationships, familial in many ways, with many Romanians. Adam J. Sorkin, the Great Friend of Romanian Poetry
We profoundly regret the passing away of Adam J. Sorkin (August 9, 1943 – December 11, 2025), who dedicated his life in a unique way to translating Romanian poetry into English as an author of more than sixty volumes of anthologies and of individual authors – Marin Sorescu, Mircea Ivănescu, Nora Iuga, Gabriela Melinescu, Mircea Cărtărescu, Mariana Marin, Mircea Dinescu, Ioan Flora, Magda Cârneci, Ruxandra Cesereanu, Ion Mureșan, Ioana Ieronim, Marta Petreu, Saviana Stănescu, Mihai Ursachi, Daniela Crăsnaru, Liliana Ursu, George Vulturescu Radu Andriescu, Emilian Galaicu-Păun.
Adam Sorkin was two times a Fulbright Scholar in the 1980’, teaching English and American Literature at the University of Bucharest. It is then that he discovered our poetry and started translating it, becoming, over the following four decades, the most prolific translator of Romanian poetry into English.

Fulbright is not just about research and academic events. At least for me, it was also about meeting new people, experiencing the local food, trying to understand different values. For two months my wife and daughter (she is 9) were in Athens with me, and together we were able to travel to Orlando, San Francisco, and Washington. The experiences we had together were extraordinary, and my daughter was impressed enough to declare that she plans to come to college at UGA, probably around 2032.
