Fulbright ETA Isaura Bozu delivered an interactive lecture exploring American culture through food, travel, sports, and history at the American Corner in Constanța, hosted by fellow Fulbrighter Paris Mercurio. The session, titled “Corn Culture and Coal-Fire Pizza,” began with an icebreaker survey that encouraged students to learn more about one another. Students were then shown six photographs from Isaura’s travels across 30 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia, sparking conversations about language, identity, and intercultural experiences.
The presentation highlighted the culture of New Haven, a city well known for its universities and legendary pizza scene. Students learned that there are approximately eight universities within New Haven County, including Yale University. New Haven has around 63 pizza establishments, while Connecticut has over 1,376 pizza restaurants statewide. Isaura explained how New Haven-style “apizza” became famous through Italian communities, with coal-fired brick ovens, unique dough recipes, and even the mineral-rich water from the Northeast contributing to its distinct flavor. Isaura also shared the story of how the Frisbee was inspired by pie tins tossed around by Yale students before evolving into the plastic disc recognized worldwide today.
The lecture concluded with trivia about New York City’s boroughs, the Statue of Liberty, and American regional culture. Through storytelling, humor, and interactive discussion, the event encouraged students to engage with American culture while reflecting on their own global perspectives and experiences.
