"I brought back enduring connections with colleagues and friends and a resolve to return to reconnect and continue to explore the hidden corners of Romania and maybe find my own special spot in a secluded 'sat.'"
U.S. Fulbrighter Dr. Ioanida Costache gave a guest lecture at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst on the Romani Holocaust as part of Prof. Jonathan Skolnik’s Holocaust history course. In addition to providing a broad overview of the history of Romani persecution during the Second World War, the lecture presented major themes and debates surrounding Romani Holocaust historiography and memory, problematizing the “forgotten-ness” of the Romani genocide. Ioanida shared testimony from Romani survivors and Roma Holocaust songs, encouraging the students to think about what gets lost in written archives versus musico-oral archives of persecution. Ioanida is a U.S. Fulbright researcher affiliated with the The “Elie Wiesel” National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania.
