Romania took hold of my heart in 2015 and since then has consumed my mind and soul. As with any genuine commitment, my relationship with this beautiful, complex country has grown and deepened over time as I have learned of its many tragedies, as well as its many triumphs. I have surrendered myself to Romania. [...] As I continue my Romanian journey, I marvel over the resiliency and fortitude of the people. I am fortunate to have developed close relationships, familial in many ways, with many Romanians. New Book by Fulbright Alumna Geta Dumitriu
Professor Geta Dumitriu is the author of a new volume titled Puritani și Puritane. Noi începuturi pe pămînt nord-american (Puritan Men and Women. New Beginnings on the North-American Soil), issued by Ratio et Revelatio publishing house in 2020. Professor Dumitriu lectured on Nineteenth Century American Literature at the University of Bucharest and was a Fulbright scholar in the academic year 1993-1994 at the University of California at Los Angeles.
After defining the Puritans in terms of religious belief, theology, and their relation to the Established Church in England, she focuses on those who went to America and founded the colony of Plymouth (1620) and the Massachusetts Bay colony (1630). She deals especially with the latter — William Bradford, the governor of Plymouth, is given only one chapter — and presents the first twenty years of its history when John Winthrop was for the most part the governor. Particular attention is paid to the political and economic factors. The role of Anne Hutchinson in the religious life of the colony is underlined, as well as the contribution of Anne Bradstreet in the field of poetry.
