Romania took hold of my heart in 2015 and since then has consumed my mind and soul. As with any genuine commitment, my relationship with this beautiful, complex country has grown and deepened over time as I have learned of its many tragedies, as well as its many triumphs. I have surrendered myself to Romania. [...] As I continue my Romanian journey, I marvel over the resiliency and fortitude of the people. I am fortunate to have developed close relationships, familial in many ways, with many Romanians. And I am eternally grateful to have been granted a Fulbright and honored to become part of this amazing community.
Dr. James McCollum, Professor Emeritus with The University of Alabama in Huntsville, has been a constant presence in Romania for almost 30 years, contributing in substantial ways to the development of academic and educational relationships between the U.S. and Romania. Two times recipient of Fulbright Scholar grants, in 1991 and 2001, and again as a Fulbright Specialist in 2005 and 2010, Jim McCollum is both a pioneer and a tenacious pillar of the Fulbright Program in Romania after 1989. In the latest book narrating this long experience, titled Work & Play in Foreign Lands, Professor McCollum and co-author Barbara McCollum evoke Romania and their many friends, former students and colleagues.
